Harmonic·Article |Automatic|

I can’t embed this video, so click here to watch it.  I’ve posted some lyrics, in true Prince form.

I’ll rub your back forever

It’s automatic (A-U-T-O-matic)

I’ll look 4 a needle in a haystack

That’s automatic 2 (A-U-T-O-matic)

I’ll go down on U all night long

It’s automatic
(I will, yes I will babe)

And even when I’m right, I’ll be wrong,
That’s automatic 2 (A-U-T-O-matic)

Hey

A-U-T-O-matic, tell me what to do
A-U-T-O-matic, so in love with U

Harmonic·Article |Raspberry Beret|

I’ve heard that this song is actually a metaphor for the loss of virginity, but since an article of clothing is repeatedly referenced in the chorus, it made the cut.  Just in case you were wondering, raspberry beret = hymen.

Also not insignificant is the fact that Prince is one of the most recent iterations of the black dandy. A subversive trickster in many ways, his presence as a pop culture icon encourages all of us to actively and proudly embrace the ambiguities surrounding surface appearances, which seems to me a most authentic version of reality.

Favorite verse:

I was working part-time in a five-and-dime
My boss was Mr. McGee
He told me several times that he didn’t like my kind
Cause I was a bit 2 leisurely

I was speaking with my father recently about the black work ethic.  I’ve always been encouraged to my very best and to “manifest excellence,” by family, friends, and mentors.  My father tells me that his father, who detailed cars for a living and only had a sixth grade education, passed these ideas on to his children, who were the first in his line to be college educated.  While I totally believe that hard work is a key to success, I also actively dislike the pangs of performance anxiety and accompanying paranoia that exists for many black and other marginalized folks attempting to find fulfillment through employment in America’s white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy.

I like the idea of a person of color being leisurely on the job, imagery that is none too familiar to my imagination.  The lyrics of this song describe a person who is uses his job to pursue things that bring him enjoyment, and perhaps even love.  If only we could all be so lucky.
