A Colored Woman’s Subjective Wearable Reflections on an Imperialist White-Supremacist Capitalist Patriarchy or How I Learned to Love
1. an interpretation of black culture and history, using fashion, dress, and body.
2. 6 custom-made, originally designed pieces.*
3. a commentary on present day consumer culture and the forces that shape(d) it.
4. a 365 day exercise in self-portrait photography.
The challenge I’ve given myself is to wear six items of clothing for a year, and take a picture of myself everyday during this time period.
*One pair of pants, one shirts, one dress, one sweater, one vest and one coat to be exact. These items will constitute the whole of artist’s wardrobe for a one year period. Undergarments (underwear, etc.), accessories (hats and headcoverings, winter necessities) and jewelry will also be specially designed and custom produced.

Why? I’m especially curious about the restriction regarding clothes.

Hey, Tiffany! The reasons for me doing this are endless at this point, but to speak specifically to why I’m restricting my clothing I have a few answers.
1. From my limited research I’ve learned that the slave experience included a restriction of material resources, including clothing. One narrative suggests that some slaves got their ration of clothing or fabric to make their own clothes just once a year. This project is in some ways a tribute to the material realities of my ancestors.
2. Over the years many people have started moments to encourage people to reconsider how much stuff they actually need. Take a look at this post, http://wp.me/p1bdb0-1X , to get a better idea of what I’m talking about. It has to do with being aware of what and how we consume.
Thanks for the comment!
